Hockey Dad
Wife and I are trying to decide if a fall hockey league for my son will fit into our schedules. I think the little guy is on the cusp of “getting it”. Competition, physical, aggression. I’m thinking about helping coach, mainly with the practices and running drills. There does not seem to be any shortage of Dad’s that ” know all about how to play hockey” and help on the bench on game days. There just seems to be a shortage of Dad’s that can actually lace ‘em up and help the coach demonstrate drills and such….

Hockey Dad
Recently, over the last couple of months, Wednesday night has become my favorite night of the week. I look forward to it for seven days. Why? Because it’s my hockey night!
I go to an adult clinic from 9-10 pm and work on skills and scrimmage. Chris (the owner of a marketing firm), Joe (the pharmacist), Carl (also a pharmacist), myself and others, we all look forward to our Wednesday nights. It’s like being a kid again! However, ice time is down and there will not be another clinic until the first Thursday in September. That will be three weeks between sessions. I will have to see when there is a pick up session that I can go to. I need my fix…
In the mean time, I will increase my jogging to keep my lungs going!

Tuesday night I took my son to a parent/player skate n’ shoot, which is like an open session of ice skating for hockey players. You can take your stick and pucks out onto the ice and just have fun. We had a blast. The little guy had his best skate n’ shoot night yet! We’ve gone on the last couple of Tuesday nights for the parent/player skate n’ shoot and the little guy has been losing interest about twenty minutes into it. But this time he was gung ho the whole skate! Plus, before the skate we saw his coach, who had a game of his own to play in and invited us to watch the end of it. So after out skate n’ shoot, we bought some pizza slices and coke and watched his coach play. The little gut loved it, and talked to his coach when he came off the ice.

Friday night I took the kids ice skating. I had a good skate, worked on my edges and crossovers. My son is dying to join a league, hopefully by the end of the summer he will be ready.

Wednesday night is now hockey night for Jim. On Wednesday nights I attend an adult clinic on hockey from 9:30-10:45. I’ve gone three times now and what a blast! My skating is already improving, and I have four more Wednesdays to go to before I miss a session for our family vacation to Canada.

I’ve been trying to find time slots that I can take my son to parent/player skate and shoots at the ice rink we go to. Unfortunately, most of the ice time available does not lend itself to working parents that live 50 miles from the ice! I hope I can get out there soon with the little guy.

I mentioned I played ice hockey the Wednesday night. Did I mention how sore my inner and outer thigh muscles are? It’s a good kind of hurt, but just reminds me of how old and out of shape I am.
doghouse
I was in the dog house on Saturday. I took my to an open ice skating session, and while I was there, bought my own pair of hockey skates. Wife was none to pleased. Now, all I need is a helmet, stick and gloves and I’ll be allowed to take my son to parent/player skate and shoots. That way he can work on his stick handling.
original six
My mother in law went to Chicago this month and brought back a souvenir for my son. An official hockey puck, with the logos of the Original Six on it. I was explaining to him who the Original Six are, when it occurred to me, on our summer vacation we will be visiting three of the Original Six cities. Detroit, Toronto and Montreal. Pretty cool, and we are planning to go to the Hall of Fame in Toronto.
